EA’s Zagrobelny meets state standard in breaststroke at girls swim sectionals

Photo by Tim Frenz Bridget Zagrobelny hit the state meet qualifying time in the 100 breaststroke when she completed the event in 1 minute, 8.56 seconds to pace the Lady Blue Devils’ individual efforts during Friday’s annual Section VI Girls Swimming championships at the University at Buffalo.

Mary Brinker came ever so close to hitting the state standard in the 200 free as well, falling shy of the state cut time by just over a half second with her third-place effort of 1:57.77 in the 200 free. The only other top-15 individual effort on the night, meanwhile, was posted by Daisy Nicholl, who finished 14th (1:04.18) in the 100 backstroke.

Rounding out the individual efforts on the day were Grace Kwitek (100 breaststroke, 22nd, 1:14.95), Sarah Tully (50 free, 25th, 26.33 seconds), Caroline Kloc (100 backstroke, 25th, 1:06.81), Katherine Chugh (200 free, 26th, 2:11.49) and Anna Brinker (100 breaststroke, 31st, 1:16.34).

The Lady Blue Devils also came close to hitting the state cut time in the 200 free relay, as the foursome of Zagrobelny, Tully, Chugh and Mary Brinker placed third in 1:41.78, which was just nine-hundredths of a second off the state meet standard. East Aurora’s 200 medley relay of Nicholl, Zagrobelny, Tully and Mary Brinker, meanwhile, placed seventh in 1:53.21.

East Aurora’s 400 free relay of Chugh, Nicholl, Jessica Drozdowski and Sierra White-Thomson rounded out the team’s efforts by placing 25th in 4:05.93.

For those who have qualified, the season will end next Friday and Saturday, Nov. 16 and 17, with the state championship meet at Ithaca College.
