National Blue Ribbon School designation shows tradition of excellence at EAHS

High School principal

Recently, East Aurora High School was recognized as a 2017 National Blue Ribbon School by the United States Department of Education. Out of the 170,000 schools in our nation, just 292 were named an Exemplary High Performing School. This award honors and brings public attention to American schools for their overall academic excellence. It is part of a larger education effort to identify and disseminate knowledge about effective school leadership and teaching practices.

This honor represents the dedication of our students, teachers, administrators, support staff and parents. In fact, in the 35 years this award has been presented to schools, approximately only 8,000 have been given this recognition. Statistically, students have a better chance of becoming a professional athlete than winning this award. It is something to be extremely proud of. This was an involved process that started with the New York State Education Department contacting me to let me know that it was nominating East Aurora High School for consideration. English teachers Christopher Cummins and Jason Zevenbergen helped supply the required information, and just a few months later, we were informed of our distinction. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the community for supporting our students in all that they do. Together, we are making East Aurora a Destination District in Western New York.

In addition to this award, we are also pleased to have completed a successful fall season of athletic achievements as well as outstanding work in our music, technology and extracurricular activities. It has been a busy school year, and now we look forward to our holiday concerts and events taking place in the month of December. I highly encourage everyone in the community to come out and see our students perform on stage, on the mats, on the courts, on the track and in the pool. The effort our students put into their endeavors is second to none, and this is clearly evident in our Blue Ribbon School designation.

As we move into the winter months, I’d like to remind everyone that in the event of the high school closing or activities being canceled due to inclement weather, please consult our local television and radio stations for any announcements. We will also contact parents through our School Messenger system. I encourage everyone to like East Aurora High School on Facebook and follow us on Twitter. We are not finished with our work. Each day brings new opportunities for our students and teachers to improve on the strong foundation we have built. We are proud of our accomplishments in our school and in the community. We will continue building on our tradition of excellence in the months and years to come.

Our achievements are best summed up by the United States Secretary of Education who stated that “East Aurora’s teachers and students are visionaries, innovators, and leaders.”

This is exactly what we strive for, and I am proud to be a part of our high school’s success.
