All-Bee selection process explained

Given the tremendous success of last year’s squad, The Bee’s sports staff is once again proud to recognize some of the area’s top talent with the offensive unit’s portion of the 2017 All-Bee Football Team.

The voting process for the All-Bee Team is completely in the hands of the coaches of teams in The Bee’s coverage area. At the end of the season, each coach was contacted and asked to submit the names of his top two starters, by position — besides kicker and quarterback — from which the nominated players’ list was created. Upon receiving each team’s starting lineup, coaches were then mailed a ballot and the list of nominated players from which to choose.

Each coach was asked to vote for the top two players at each position — running back, wide receiver and offensive lineman — he thought were most deserving of all-star status. One punter and quarterback were also voted for, as was a Player of the Year. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own players.

Each vote was worth one point. The total points were compiled, which determined the order of the All-Bee teams. The two players with the most points at each position were named the First Team All-Stars — unless one was the Player of the Year, in which case it was the players receiving the second and third-most votes. The players receiving the next two highest amount of votes per position were named the Second Team all-stars, while the next two players receiving the next-highest amount of votes were named Honorable Mention all-stars.

Just one kicker and quarterback were named per level.

Of the 24 football coaches who were sent a ballot and list of nominees, only three did not return a completed ballot. The coach of one of those teams politely declined to participate when contacted by The Bee, but the other teams’ coaches failed to respond to multiple requests for a completed ballot.
