Methadone clinic needed in Southtowns

Finding treatment for addiction should not be a hassle for a Southtowns resident who is trying to find the way to sobriety.

Unfortunately for those who are dealing with addictions to heroin or other narcotic pain medication, they have to travel out of their community to find methadone because there are no clinics in the Southtowns that provide the drug that can help those who have not responded well to other treatments.

The approved Abbott Corners Methadone Program is a positive step in making sure these patients are able to receive the treatment they need to continue their road to recovery.

The program is a success in two ways. It addresses a need for a methadone clinic in the Southtowns, and it is highly-regulated to make sure that residents and patients will be safe. The clinic, located at 3176 Abbott Road, Suite 500, near Lake Avenue, will distribute the medication from 6 to 9 a.m. seven days a week. The clinic will have a separate entrance, and an armed guard will be in place from 5:30 to 9:30 a.m.

This will allow the 100 patients in the program to receive their liquid-form dosage of methadone within the three-hour period and continue on with their day.

These are not just residents who are coming to a clinic to get methadone and then linger. They are getting help for their addiction, and receiving the methadone is just one part of their enrollment in a treatment program at the clinic.

The way people view methadone needs to change, and the only way to do that is through education. This clinic will provide a much-needed service to those who battle addiction every day. We shouldn’t look for ways to condemn these individuals. We should look for all avenues to help them in their fight.

Lake Shore Behavior Health, which will operate the clinic, has been around for 45 years and has had a facility in Hamburg for 10 years. They have a track record of helping people and managing their facilities accordingly.

Everyone should support this addition of a methadone clinic to give those in the Southtowns an easier way to receive addiction treatment instead of having to travel to the City of Buffalo to obtain the care they need.

The opioid epidemic is everywhere. Stop thinking about a drug like methadone in an outdated mindset and realize this drug could be the difference in a person conquering an addiction or succumbing to it.
