Community Education sets 110 courses

This fall, East Aurora Continuing/ Community Education will offer 110 courses, and registration is easier than ever, with online, mail-in or walk-in registration beginning this week.

Fifteen courses are new this fall, including “Beginning Heb r e w, ” a jointly-sponsored course with West Seneca Schools.

In the Fine Arts, Crafts and Hobbies category, local photographer Terry Tomczyk joins the staff to help individuals fine tune their photography skills.

“Digital Photography with introduction to Photoshop,” is a course that claims to spark both sides of your brain with artistic and computer introductions to creative photography.

Arts students may also want to explore “Copper Enameling” with Genevieve Turner, or join one of the hot glass working classes offered by Vicki Schneider.

If it’s instant musical expression you desire, the “Just ONCE Piano” and “Just ONCE Drums” courses will enable participants to play an instrument for their own enjoyment after one three-hour class.

Other artistic courses include watercolor painting, stained glass work, and jewelry making.

For those craving cheese or bubbly, they will be able to indulge their taste buds with Carl Moody’s taste of Italian cheeses,

Are you a Cheese Lover?” at the Old Orchard, or the perennial favorite, “Dwight’s Picks,” featuring wine tasting at the Roycroft Inn.

If trips or tours are more your thing, Community Education will be offering bus trips that highlight foliage, Christmas and regional themes.

Individuals looking to start an exercise regiment will have a selection of 32 fitness courses to choose from including yoga, Pilates, Zumba, aerobics, Chi Kung, water fitness and strength training. Two of the fitness courses continue in West Falls, through the courtesy of St. George’s and St. Paul’s churches.

Also under the Healthy Living, Home and Self heading, Janice Wilton is offering “Everyday Essential Oils” and “Emotional Freedom Technique,” as well as her “Weight Reduction with Hypnosis.”

Under the Academics heading, local author Anthony Izzo will teach, “Write Your Novel,” and longtime creative writing teacher Rick Ohler comes “Advanced Creative Writing Workshop: Let’s Get Serious;” a course that will take Rick’s dedicated students on to the next level of writing. Rick’s popular writing series is also online again this year.

At the high school, Amy Marklinger will compliment her SAT Verbal prep classes with “SAT Vocabulary,” a quick start to the words most frequently encountered in the exam. Dr. Martha Horohoe will continue her French and Spanish language courses for beginners and advanced students.

There will also be safety courses offered through Community Education.

Deb Kampff, a veteran safety teacher, will lead “HELP 101,” basic emergency rescue techniques for parents, caregivers or anyone who wants a quick CPR refresher.

For those who need to certify, or recertify, for CPR or AED, Deb also offers the full “American Red Cross CPR/AED Recertification.”

If you would like to know about law and/or finance, attorney Ned Snyder will be teaching “Law Everyone Should Know” as a basis for personal law information, and under the heading of Business and Finance, the courses “Social Security: Make the Right Choice,” “Long Term Care Insurance,” “Retirement, Investing and Income” and “Nine Big Mistakes When Saving for Retirement” cover many other topics of personal business interest.

Other programs continuing this fall include ballroom dance with Barbara Bradley, driver training and insurance points reduction courses with Ron Krowka and David Schmidt and “Private Pilot,” with Brian Poliner.

In Parenting, Barbara Condrell returns this fall with “Parenting 1-2-3 Magic: Effective Discipline for Children 2 – 12,” humorous look at parenting and a serious look at disciplining.

Parents will also want to register quickly for Kimberly McAtee’s “Kids’ Shake and Stretch” and Molly McDermott’s “Happy Hearts Kids: Family Yoga and Movement,” each listed under Fitness.
